Top 5 things to do at Lake Whetstone
Looking for a fun way to spend your summer day? You don’t have to go far. Lake Whetstone offers plenty of opportunities for recreation and relaxation, with activities for residents of all ages. Located at 18701 Montgomery Village Avenue, it is a popular destination for residents looking to stay active or simply connect with nature.
Here are five ways to enjoy your next visit to Lake Whetstone.
Rent a Boat

Get out on the water and experience the lake up close. Rent paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, or rowboats during the summer season. Paddle boats are a popular choice, but if you’re looking for a little more adventure, try one of the other boats for a fun challenge while exploring the lake.
MVF’s Lake Whetstone Boat Dock is open for rentals from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays throughout the summer, through Aug. 29.

Go Fishing
Lake Whetstone is home to a variety of fish, including sunfish, largemouth bass, carp, and brown bullhead. Bring your own rod or rent one. A valid Maryland fishing license is required for anyone age 16 or older.
Let your young ones join us for Evening Catch on Sunday, July 26, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Youth ages 15 and younger can enjoy free fishing rod rentals and bait while supplies last. Our last Evening Catch of the season is on Sunday, August 23.

Enjoy Birdwatching
Nature lovers can enjoy a variety of birds that call Lake Whetstone home. Keep an eye out for great blue herons and black-crowned night herons, often spotted around the lake and near the rookery located on the island in the middle of the lake. In addition to these popular birds, you might be lucky enough to spot a rarer species, such as the Anhinga that was seen at the lake earlier this year.
Birdwatching is a great way to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and connect with nature. You can also keep an eye out for other wildlife and may even catch a glimpse of the lake's resident beavers.

Walk or Jog the Path
Looking for a scenic route? Lake Whetstone offers paved pathways where you can enjoy the beautiful lakeside view as you walk or run. The paved distance from the parking lot to the pier on the far side of the lake is approximately 1.2 miles, while the distance from the parking lot to the tunnel is about half a mile. This is perfect for a leisurely stroll, brisk walk, or morning jog.
Play Sand Volleyball
Gather family and friends for a game of volleyball at the sand volleyball court. The court is available on a first-come, first-served basis, making it an easy and fun way to add a little friendly competition to your visit.
