The shadow of a great blue heron crosses over the still water as it flies to its high nest on a secluded island. Ducks call to each other from across the lake. Fish dart below the surface of the water trying to resist the temptation of the fisherman’s lore. What sights and sounds await you on Lake Whetstone this summer?

This invitation to adventure begins Saturday May 25, which is opening day for boat rentals at the Lake Whetstone Boat Dock, 18701 Montgomery Village Avenue. Whether your goal is to race around the lake or simply go for a leisurely float, there are opportunities for experienced paddlers and novices alike. Canoes, paddle boats and kayaks are available for rent from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday throughout the summer.  Rental fees are kept at a modest rate, ensuring that everyone can partake in the joy of boating without breaking the bank.

If you would like to bring your own vessel on the water, you can do so with a permit. By obtaining a Montgomery Village Foundation ID sticker for your boat, you are welcome to boat on Lake Whetstone any day of the week during park hours. Only boats with a current sticker are permitted on the water. You may purchase a Lake Whetstone ID Sticker for $10 per year at the MVF Office, 10120 Apple Ridge Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or at the Lake Whetstone Dock on Saturdays.

Let this suburban oasis beckon to you. Even the busiest summer day fades into tranquility on the gentle waves of Lake Whetstone. This summer, pick a Saturday, grab your sunscreen, pack a picnic and head down to Lake Whetstone to experience the joy of boating for yourself. Whether you are seeking serenity, excitement or simply a chance to connect with nature, the waters await.
