New native plants at North Creek Nature Center
On Saturday, April 22, in celebration of Earth Day, the Montgomery Village Garden Club and the Montgomery Village Foundation worked together to bring more native plants to North Creek Lake.
With the help of local Girl Scouts Ashleigh Barnes and Lauren Shuttles, four different types of native azaleas were planted at the North Creek Nature Center: Canescens, Choptank, My Mary and Rhododendron Periclymenoides. Native azaleas are beneficial in supporting local insects, birds and animals, and are more tolerant of local conditions, needing less care and watering.
In addition, three small Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) trees were planted in a triangle pattern near the North Creek Nature Center where the pathways cross, and are marked by metal fences to help protect them. Black-and-white striped zebra swallowtail butterfly require Pawpaw leaves as its only larval food plant. The flowers on these trees will emit a slight rotting smell in order to attract insects that will cross-pollinate between the three trees.
Funding for these plants was made possible by the Pam Sonneville Native Plant Education Fund, and were purchased from White’s Nursery in Germantown.
