Community in Action: Derek Coleman completes Eagle Scout Project at North Creek Lake Park
On Friday, Oct. 17, Derek Coleman of Scouting America Troop 1988 completed his Eagle Scout project, a newly installed path in the butterfly garden (Monarch Waystation) at North Creek Lake Park (20300 Aspenwood Lane), bringing a year of planning and community collaboration to a meaningful close. Derek, along with a team of fellow Scouting America youth members, worked together to loosen compacted soil, lay down landscape fabric to prevent weed growth, and carefully construct a pathway.

The idea for the project began a year ago when a member of the Montgomery Village Garden Club approached Derek with a vision and was looking for someone to put it into action. Derek stepped up to the task, driven by a desire to serve and make a lasting impact.
Over the course of the year, Derek worked hard to fundraise for the project, purchase tools and materials, and recruit volunteers. He also communicated closely with Montgomery Village Foundation (MVF) staff to assess the garden’s needs, finalize plans, and coordinate a team to complete the manual work. From planning to execution, the project was a hands-on experience that taught Derek the responsibilities and leadership required to coordinate a project. Reflecting on the experience, he noted that the project gave him a sense of duty to the community and helped him build meaningful connections throughout the area.
“Thank you to MVF for allowing me to help with this,” Derek shared. “Seeing everything come together is the sweetest.”

The newly installed path not only improves the functionality of the Monarch Waystation but also enhances its visual appeal and overall visitor experience at North Creek Lake Park. MVF is grateful for Derek’s initiative and proud to support projects that foster leadership, environmental stewardship and community pride.
Congratulations to Derek Coleman on completing his Eagle Scout project, and thank you for helping Montgomery Village bloom a little brighter. MVF looks forward to partnering with Scouting America on future projects that bring value to the community.
