It was wonderful to see so many people around the Village celebrating Earth Day 2024. On Monday, April 22, several residents were spotted picking up trash along roadsides, planting native flowers in gardens and enjoying the beautiful weather.

Early Earth Day celebrants attended events on Saturday, April 20 to clean and beautify our Montgomery Village parks. At the North Creek Lake Park Nature Center, the Montgomery Village Garden Club members and visitors planted spring ephemerals, ferns, deciduous azaleas and Maryland native flowers. Participants also weeded, prepped beds and distributed wildflower seeds throughout the park. All this effort will not only freshen the look of the demonstration and butterfly gardens, but will provide important food sources for local and migratory insects. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, knowledge and muscle! Over at Lake Whetstone on Saturday, the first Rake the Lake event of the year brought together families, local scouts, neighbors and eager park visitors who were all determined to make the shores safer for wildlife. Trash from roadsides, and unintentional litter moved by wind and water end up on our lakeshores. Wildlife may be impacted if they get entrapped in plastics, cut by sharp objects, or mistake litter for food. Armed with trash pickers and bags, Rake the Lake participants picked up more than 20 bags of trash! The collective efforts of these dedicated volunteers not only beautified the lakeshore, but also made a significant difference in protecting local wildlife from potential harm. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event!
