Share the road and play your part

As warmer weather arrives and daylight hours increase, more pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists will be out in the community. Drivers should expect higher activity and stay alert, especially in neighborhoods, near parks, around shopping centers, and along major commuting routes.

In November 2025, the Montgomery County Council passed legislation enhancing safety for cyclists. Bill 28-25 prohibits vehicles from standing, stopping, or parking in designated bikeways across the county.

The Montgomery County Police Department urges drivers to share the road and offers the following tips:

• Slow down in residential areas.
• Eliminate distractions and keep your eyes on the road.
• Give cyclists and motorcyclists plenty of room when passing.
• Stop fully at crosswalks and yield to pedestrians.
• Watch for children who may enter the roadway unexpectedly.
• Use extra caution when turning, merging, or backing out of driveways.
• Be mindful of limited visibility during early mornings, evenings, or changing weather.
