Recognizing more than 100 years of combined service from Gaithersburg Meals On Wheels volunteers
On July 11, volunteers, family members and friends gathered at Asbury Methodist Village to recognize three Gaithersburg Meals On Wheels volunteers. Senator Nancy King (also a resident of Montgomery Village) presented the citations. In the late 1980s to early 1990s, Senate King coordinated Gaithersburg Meals On Wheels and served on its Board. Here is a brief background on the three recognized volunteers.
After his retirement from the Navy, Tom Gill joined Gaithersburg Meals On Wheels as a driver in March 1992. He then joined the Board in March 1994 and became President in March 2004. He was recognized for his 31 years of volunteer service, especially his dedicated leadership as President for close to 20 years. In his remarks, he said how thankful he is for our partners from Asbury Methodist Village for supporting our mission and all the volunteers who deliver the meals and make the organization a success.
Lauren Kingsland devoted 33 years of volunteer service to Gaithersburg Meals On Wheels. She started in 1990 as a driver, then as Volunteer Coordinator from 1995 to 2003, and finally a dispatcher and Vice President. She is moving away from the area in August.
People talk about remarkable service to the community, but Jeanne Rathsack has given service that is really and truly remarkable! Jeanne retired as a driver earlier this summer at the age of 91.
Gaithersburg Meals On Wheels delivers to about 80 clients each week day (that is two nutritious meals in each delivery, totaling 160 meals), to homebound people throughout Montgomery Village, Gaithersburg, Washington Grove and small parts of Derwood and Rockville.
