Metro eliminates $2 SmarTrip card fee for seniors

Metro---Washington

Metro’s Board of Directors has approved the elimination of the $2 fee on Senior SmarTrip® cards. Beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 16, Senior SmarTrip cards will be issued at no cost to customers ages 65 and older.

With Metro’s ongoing commitment to public transit accessibility and affordability, this program is one of several new initiatives designed to reduce fares, streamline the customer enrollment experience and offer no cost SmarTrip cards. By eliminating this fee, third-party payment collection will no longer be needed, which is currently a barrier to participation for social service agencies and other organizations to distribute the card. It is also designed to promote partnership opportunities for distribution so that more seniors can access public transit.
