MCDOT to change access at Tall Oaks Road/Meadowcroft Drive intersection

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has identified a vehicular and pedestrian safety issue and hazardous driving condition at the intersection of Tall Oaks Road and Montgomery Village Avenue and will be altering the traffic pattern at this location in the near future.

Traffic exiting Tall Oaks Road onto southbound Montgomery Village Avenue is spilling over into the northbound lanes of Montgomery Village Avenue, often causing backups and obstacles; traffic moving both ways through the median have also been subject to collisions. This includes large commercial vehicles using the route as a cut-through; Tall Oaks Road is a narrow private residential street not intended for that type of vehicle, traffic or volume.

To mitigate the issue, MCDOT will be installing flex-post barriers in the median of Montgomery Village Avenue at the Tall Oaks Road/Meadowcroft Drive intersection. The barriers will allow for one-way turns only and restrict cut-through access. With the barrier in place, the new traffic pattern will be limited to the following:

  • Northbound Montgomery Village Avenue traffic will be able to make left turns only onto Meadowcroft Drive.
  • Southbound Montgomery Village Avenue traffic will be able to make left turns only onto Tall Oaks Road.
  • No U-Turns or cut-through traffic will be allowed in this median.

In the same approximate time period, access restrictions to Tall Oaks Road at Arrowhead Road will also be established to reduce the potential for cut-through traffic and help deter commercial vehicle access.

Residents are cautioned to take note of the new traffic pattern. MCDOT will be erecting warning signage in the immediate future and installing the barriers in a timely manner.
