Gaithersburg Meals on Wheels is looking for drivers

Meals-on-Wheels---Gaithersburg

You may have heard of Meals on Wheels, but did you know there is an all-volunteer local Meals on Wheels to serve our Montgomery Village community? There is often confusion about different organizations that serve under this title. There is Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland—a large group that delivers food to hundreds of clients through Baltimore and surrounding counties. Another group, the local Gaithersburg Meals on Wheels serves Gaithersburg, Montgomery Village, Washington Grove and small parts of Derwood—from 75 to 80 clients a week, Monday through Friday.

Gaithersburg Meals on Wheels has a continuing need for drivers to deliver hot and cold meals at lunchtime to home-bound elderly and disabled neighbors. That is only half of the group's mission; the other half is to check on neighbors who are often isolated.

Meals are prepared at Asbury Methodist Village and picked up by drivers between 10:30 and 11:15 a.m. Monday through Friday. Containers are provided for carrying the meals, and delivery takes one hour or so, with 10 to 12 clients on each route. Volunteers are asked to make deliveries in their own car, which is an average of once every other week or only two days a month. Children are welcome to accompany parents. Training is provided. The group can use help in other ways, such as, communications/public relations and special projects. Please leave a message at 301-216-4200., and the group's leaders will get back to you. The group has no paid staff, only volunteers, so if it takes a little while to get back to you, please be patient.
