Cold weather reminders
As the seasons change and the temperatures drop, it is important to prepare our homes and condominiums. Please review these important reminders to protect your property and others’ property.
- If you are leaving home for a few days, do not turn off your heat. If it gets too cold, water in the pipes can freeze and burst, which will cause major damage to your home as well as any adjoining homes in townhome and condominium communities.
- If you plan to be away, shut off the water supply valve to your home if possible. Once turned off, drain the lines by running the sink or tub/shower until no water comes out.
- Keep your thermostat set to 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Make sure someone local, who is checking your home for you, has your contact information in case an emergency occurs.
- Make sure your gutters are clean of debris so that water can flow freely. In a deep freeze, blockages can cause ice damming and damage to the inside of your home.
- Check the exterior lighting and make certain all lights are working. If you see a common area light out, please report it to either Community Management (301-948-0110) or online at https://montgomeryvillage.com/streetlight-outage-form.
- Get your HVAC checked to make sure you are not stuck without heat during the coldest months and do not forget to get the chimney cleaned to avoid a fire. Check for air leaks and get them sealed.
- Make sure the windows are closed, and vents are open.
- If you feel like something is “out of sorts” or know someone is away, contact your Community Manager. Check on your neighbors.
- Do not forget to check montgomeryvillage.com for any weather-related issues and updates. If you haven't already signed up for SMS Text Alerts from MVF or your local homeowners association or condominium association, please learn more here and sign up.
