Montgomery Village is a large-scale planned community in the Washington, DC metro area with more than 12,500 homes and 40,000 residents. Established in 1966, the Montgomery Village Foundation, Inc. (MVF) is a 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation/homeowner’s association that provides services to the residents of the community. MVF owns and maintains more than 335 acres of parkland, 20 tennis courts, 19 recreation and park areas, 13 pickleball courts, 6 pools, 5 basketball courts, 4 community centers, 2 hard court soccer courts and a natural amphitheater. The Band Director/Conductor conducts and is responsible for all rehearsals and performances of the band. Selects the musical literature to be rehearsed and performed by the band. The Band Director/Conductor has control over the artistic directions, taking into account the history/traditions of the Montgomery Village Community Band, and be open to suggestions. Communicates with MVF supervisor regarding Band needs and concerns. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Montgomery Village Foundation.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Conducts the Band with enthusiasm. Knowledgeable in concert bank repertoire.
- Expected to create a solid and friendly rapport with musicians.
- Manages and has overall responsibility for Band rehearsals and performances.
- Interprets music and can communicate the interpretation to band members.
- Recognizes and addresses the source of problems in the ensemble.
- Plans and prepares musical programs.
- Assists in planning, scheduling and booking of band activities.
- Evaluates rehearsals and performances.
- Selects and obtains music to be performed by The Montgomery Village Community Band with input of the band members.
- Arranges for band instrumentation and seating.
- Provides guidance to band officers on bank-related matters.
- Communicates MVF polices and procedures to Steering Committee and Officers.
- Serves as an ex-officio (non-voting) member of the Steering Committee.
- Serves as the band’s liaison with Montgomery Village Foundation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough background, understanding and knowledge of music.
- Thorough knowledge of MVF policy and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:
- Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteer participants, other staff and MVF management.
- The ability to conduct in a clear way.
- The ability to diagnose problems in the ensemble and give instruction to correct them.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Performance and/or conducting in an adult community band
- Completion of college with a degree in music, or related experiences in the music field.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- The ability to work with adult musicians of all skill levels.
- Knowledge of band literature appropriate to diverse skill levels.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Availability for concerts, special events, and rehearsals.
- The ability to create a collegial rapport with band members, while challenging players and giving guidance and confidence to less experienced players.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Through knowledge of music and experience working with community, school or military bands.
