This position is 20 hours a week at $18.50 an hour.
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The Activity Coordinator serves as the onsite coordinator for the Seniors in Action (SiA) program. The Seniors in Action program offers adults 55 and over in the Montgomery Village community activities including: social gatherings, arts and crafts, leisure games, exercise classes, book discussions, and special events. The Activity Coordinator also manages the Senior Nutrition Program in partnership with Montgomery County. This is a year-round position that works approximately 20 hours per week, Mondays through Thursdays, 8:30am to 1:30pm and select Fridays. Some weekends or holidays may be required as needed. This position will work special events, private rentals, front desk, and other frontline services as requested.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Manage all onsite facets of daily operation of the Seniors in Action program.
- This position works independently under general supervision and sets up, monitors/leads activities, and breaks down upon completion of activities.
- Ensure that participants have completed the registration and waiver process prior to participating in any activity and verifies eligibility; monitors program attendance and engagement.
- Staff Liaison on the Senior Advisory Committee and works with supervisor to ensure that the program is meeting the community’s needs.
- Facilitates the daily operations of the Senior Nutrition Program, including taking meal orders, ensuring food safety standards, meal distribution and daily reconciliation, and accurate documentation of all required paperwork.
- Creates requisitions or procures equipment and supplies with supervisor's approval; maintains up-to-date inventory of supplies and submits all supply requests in a timely manner.
- Checks equipment and monitors activities to ensure the safety and enjoyment of participants.
- Assists staff in researching, planning and implementing activities and programs tailored to the interests and needs of the community; evaluates program activities and makes suggestions for changes/improvements as needed; Reaches out to organizations, community groups, or professionals to schedule guest speakers as directed.
- Communicates concerns and makes recommendations in consultation with supervisory staff regarding participants' behavioral problems.
- Enforces MVF policy governing use of facilities, SiA Code of conduct, etc.
- Disseminates information on programs to residents and encourages participation. Assists supervisor with design and preparation of public relations materials.
- Completes various paperwork such as accident/incident reports, attendance, etc. and turns into supervisor in a timely manner.
- Secures facility and equipment; assumes responsibility for keys and passcodes.
- Takes reasonable safety precautions.
- Assists with special events, private rentals, front desk duties and other frontline services as requested and when schedule permits.
- Applicants must have access to email and a smartphone and/or computer with internet access for job related communication and scheduling
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Read, write, and speak effectively to communicate with participants, supervisors, co-workers and to accurately complete required paperwork. Ability to understand MVF policies and to communicate them to others in a polite manner.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants and other staff.
- Handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism
- Demonstrate, conduct or lead recreational activities and ensure that activities are conducted in a safe manner.
- Sufficient problem-solving skills to apply standard procedures to situations or problems which may not be clearly or easily defined.
- Must possess a high degree of attention to detail and strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously.
- Knowledge of senior health and wellness trends, recreational activities, and community resources.
- Work a variety of hours including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Work indoors at various facilities; and/or outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Perform moderate physical activities such as frequent Physical activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, crawling, carrying, pushing and grasping; Ability to set up and fold down tables and chairs.
- Repetitively lift and move 30 lbs.
- Properly use and store cleaning chemicals by reading written instructions.
- Apply good work habits such as promptness and initiative.
- Address conflict in a professional manner through problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Create a positive welcoming environment for all and maintain a positive attitude at work.
- Work both independently and collaboratively with others in a diverse work environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid certificates in Standard First Aid and CPR/AED or ability to obtain certificates within 90 days of hire.
- Prior experience in a similar work setting
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in recreation or activity coordination, especially with older adults.
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Gerontology, Social Work, or a related field.
