With longer evening darkness, colder temperatures and leaves steadily falling from the trees, there are constant reminders that winter is on its way—and fast! Along with the changes in temperature and landscapes comes a change in mindset, as we begin to think about—and gear up for—the winter holiday season. By the end of next week, houses will start to fill with decorations and lights, holiday music will fill the air and residents will start to prepare for the end of the year.
Amid all the hustle, though, are plenty of opportunities to spend some quality time with friends, family and neighbors out in the community. In the spirit of the season, there are even opportunities to help others at Montgomery Village sponsored events.
The Thanksgiving Morning Aerobic Workout is combined with a canned food drive that supports Gaithersburg HELP. Participants can “work up a hunger and help the hungry” with this 90-minute aerobic workout led by fitness instructor Karin Baker. Bring whoever is in town for the holiday with you from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 23 at Lake Marion Community Center, 8821 East Village Avenue. The cost is $8 per person at the door, or $5 with a donation of two non-perishable goods.
Enjoy the company of family and neighbors to put you in the Christmas spirit with the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Join Santa, the Watkins Mill High School Chorus and an ensemble of the Montgomery Village Community Band for some festive tunes and holiday treats. Festivities take place in the Montgomery Village Center parking lot, near CVS.
Adults and children (ages 6 months to 8) can grab Breakfast with Santa, as well as a keepsake photo and take home crafts, at this favorite holiday event. See the jolly man himself from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 at North Creek Community Center, 20125 Arrowhead Road. Space is limited and sells out quickly; pre-registration is required. Join the fun for only $12/Resident child, $17/Non-resident child and $6/Adult.
The next day, Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. you can listen to the Montgomery Village Community Band belt out holiday tunes at the annual Toys for Tots Holiday Concert. Attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped gift for the US Marines Toys for Tots program to this free concert. Lake Marion Community Center, 8821 East Village Avenue, comes alive for the holidays—get into the spirit!
Whatever your plans may hold in the coming weeks, remember to take a little time to enjoy the season. Even though it’s dark outside, your friends, family and neighbors can see you smile and wave through the twinkling of holiday lights!
