Lake safety advisory for Village residents and pets
Throughout the summer, several lakes in Montgomery County were found to contain species of blue-green algae which can be harmful to humans and animals if ingested. It is important to note that not all blue-green algae species produce toxins, and the presence of such algae is not unusual. Blooms may appear suddenly and remain for days or weeks without causing any harm.
Recently, potential algae blooms have been identified in MVF lakes, specifically at Lake Whetstone and Theater Pond (located in South Valley Park).
In light of these observations, we urge all residents to observe the following safety precautions while enjoying MVF parks, regardless of the presence of algae blooms:
- Avoid direct contact with the water when boating or fishing.
- Swimming and wading in the lakes are prohibited at all times.
- Ensure that dogs remain on a leash, and do not allow pets to drink or come into contact with the water.
- Thoroughly wash hands before eating, drinking, vaping or smoking if you have come into contact with the water.
Please note that recreational activities at Lake Whetstone remain available. Although the boat rental dock is closed for the season, fishing and the use of personal boats are still permitted.
