EVP Report: Update on Hurley Park Sports Court

Mike-Conroy-WEB-2024

Hurley Park Sports Court – On Friday, Sept. 13, work began on renovating the basketball courts at William Hurley Park, including converting the court next to the pavilion into a multi-sport court using the galvanized steel system produced by Kompan, Inc. This
system, which allows for both boarded soccer and basketball, was the preferred system during the community input phase and supported by stakeholders. The basketball court nearest to the homes will remain a basketball court, but will be upgraded to reflect the other renovated basketball courts at Whetstone Community Center, Martin P. Roy Park, and Apple Ridge Recreation Area (painted surface and plexiglass backboards).

The project is estimated to take 1 to 2 months until full completion. During the construction phase, park users should anticipate periods when the courts will be closed. An announcement will be made once the project is completed and the new upgraded courts are open for use.

Large-Scale Managers Workshop – I recently participated in the Large-Scale Managers Workshop, an annual, national development opportunity sponsored by Community Associations Institute (CAI), which was focused on the local area for 2024. Over the last year-plus, I have been working as part of the host committee, organizing community tours and education sessions of interest to other large-scale managers from around the country. I am pleased to report that more than 100 managers toured Montgomery Village, and were
extremely impressed with the look of the community and the amenities MVF is able to provide all residents.

They were equally impressed with the presentation that Director of Recreation and Parks, Duncan Mullis, gave on our Recreation Strategic Plan and the data used to guide amenity upgrades over the last 10 years. I received many compliments about how well our nearly
60-year-old community has managed to provide relevant amenities for a changing demographic.

In addition to Montgomery Village, tours and education sessions were held at the Villages of Urbana and Lake Linganore.

The Great Pumpkin Race and Fall Festival – Get your pumpkin racers ready! The Great Pumkin Race and Fall Festival will be from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at North Creek Community Center, rain or shine! Come and race, support and/or cheer on
neighbors and fellow Board of Directors members. Racer kits are available at the MVF Office if you want to build a racer—no cheaters (well, maybe just a few). I hope to see you at this great family and community event!
