Be a good neighbor - clear your sidewalk of ice and snow

Shoveling-Snow

Montgomery County reminds residents that sidewalks in front of and alongside their properties must be cleared within 24 hours after a snowstorm ends. While this requirement is the law, it's also about keeping the community safe.

Cleaning sidewalks helps schoolchildren, older adults and people who depend on transit. Sidewalks should be cleared wide enough to safely accommodate pedestrians and wheelchairs; 36 inches is the usual guideline. When shoveling, keep snow away from fire hydrants.

The Department of Housing and Community Affairs announced sidewalk snow-clearing enforcement is paused until Monday, Feb. 2. Due to sustained freezing temps, snow-packed sidewalks have become icy and difficult to clear. Although enforcement is paused, property owners should help their neighbors by clearing sidewalks as soon as it is safe and possible to do so, prioritizing entrances, exits, and accessible routes. Take interim safety measures like applying traction aids where necessary.

Residents are encouraged to check in on older adults and vulnerable neighbors, especially those who live alone. By looking out for one another, Montgomery County can stay safe and warm this winter.

Additionally, Montgomery County ended the snow emergency declaration at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29. The county had been following snow emergency procedures since 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, to allow residents to park for free at county garages during the duration of the snow emergency. Parking was also restricted along emergency routes and residential streets to assist with snow clearing.

Parking fees and enforcement will resume in county garages at 7 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30.

Freezing temperatures are expected for at least the next few days. Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling, as drifting snow, snowpack and ice patches may be present.

To report additional snow removal needs, residents can call 3-1-1 (if calling from inside the county), 240-777-0311, or create a service request online. This form is also available at the top of the county’s updated Winter Storm Information Portal.
