An EV charging station is considered an exterior modification

As the world transitions toward electric vehicles (EVs), Montgomery Village Foundation (MVF) is embracing this change and finding ways to accommodate residents' needs while maintaining harmonious aesthetics to the original community designs.

While EVs and necessary charging equipment promote sustainable transportation and help improve residents’ quality of life, installation of chargers must not create a negative impact on individual communities, especially those with limited space. EV charging stations still need to follow established requirements to ensure that MVF standards are maintained.

Any new installation of an EV charging station, conduit and/or devices is considered a modification to the exterior of the home and, therefore, must have Architectural Review Board (ARB) approval prior to installation. Please be advised that with your application submission, any conduit that runs from the home will be strongly recommended to be installed underground as to not create a hazard.

Additionally, any conduit that is intended to be located in the common space, public way and/or adjacent to the parking area, must also have prior approval from the homes corporation or condominium association where you live. This includes those that are being used temporarily with retractable hoses.

The Architectural Standards Department is currently drafting an official EV Charging Device criterion for all Village residents. In the interim, all charging stations are being considered on a case-by-case basis.
