Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to tell the people in our lives why they are so important to us, and with so much uncertainty regarding federal education funding, which is vital to keeping afterschool programs’ doors open, I want to share how important afterschool is to my family and why our community needs these programs more than ever.

My daughter, a student at Watkins Mill Elementary in Montgomery Village, never had an interest in running prior to joining the Girls on the Run afterschool program. But now she embraces it and loves the feeling of accomplishment when she sprints across the finish line. I watch firsthand as her confidence grows, and how the friendships she is forging in the program enrich her life.

I also volunteer for Girls on the Run, and as a marathoner myself I know that running helps to empower our students. Students love going to the program, which offers activities that build their skills, confidence and leadership – activities many wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to participate in.

Afterschool works for our Montgomery Village community. Research has found that every $1 dollar invested in Maryland afterschool programs leads to a return on investment of just over $3 by reducing student dropout rates, increasing kids’ earning potential as adults and reducing crime and juvenile delinquency.

It’s my personal experience as a mom and a volunteer for Girls on the Run that makes me so appreciative of afterschool programs. That’s why this Valentine’s Day I want to show my love for afterschool programs and all of the wonderful people who keep the lights on afterschool. They keep kids safe, inspire learning, and help working families in Montgomery Village and around the country. I hope lawmakers at every level recognize that and support the funding that will keep them open.
