BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Plans, implements, coordinates, supervises and evaluates fitness and wellness programs, classes and events. Serves as swim lessons supervisor. Coordinates and leads Village-wide special events.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Plans, organizes, supervises and evaluates assigned programs for all age groups at community centers and parks; plans and coordinates fitness and wellness programs, classes and events.
  • Plans, supervises and evaluates annual special events including, but not limited to, touch-a-truck, bingo events, dog swim, floating pumpkin patch and implements other special events as assigned. Assists with planning and implementing other seasonal events as requested including in the areas of fitness, wellness and sponsorship.
  • Serves as a swim lesson supervisor under the direction of the Aquatics Manager. Supervises and schedules instructional staff, manages participant and instructor needs and concerns. Evaluates participants’ progress. Assures that required paperwork is completed in a timely manner. Assures the quality of swim instruction is maintained at the highest level.
  • Assists with recruiting and onboarding swim instructors. Assists with planning and leading in-service trainings to include both classroom and in-water.
  • Researches program trends; assesses community needs; and plans, implements, coordinates and evaluates a diverse portfolio of programs, instructional classes and workshops for all ages with the focus on fitness/wellness and swim instruction. Promotes diverse participation of persons from various cultural, educational and economic backgrounds.
  • Manages swimming lessons for summer camps and supports summer camp programs as directed.
  • Develops relationship with local businesses and secures prizes for bingo and/or sponsorships for other programs. Coordinates advertising with local schools and PTAs. Assists with marketing support as directed.
  • Acts as the facility rentals supervisor in the absence of the Recreation Specialist in charge of facility rentals, and assists with rental functions as assigned.
  • Interviews, coordinates, supervises, evaluates temporary staff and independent contractors. Responsible for ensuring that hiring/onboarding procedures are followed. Approves payroll/paysheets.
  • Completes monthly reports, program plans and evaluations. Responsible for ensuring that administrative procedures, including waivers, are completed, and comply with financial procedures.
  • In conjunction with Communications, develops marketing materials such as press releases, posters, fliers, swinging signs, and center bulletin boards. Coordinates social media information with Communications staff; distributes materials as needed. Prepares information for quarterly recreation guides.
  • Communicates MVF policies and procedures to staff and residents. Responds to resident inquires and concerns and reports incidents to supervisor.
  • Maintains all class and program equipment/supplies and ensures that they are kept clean and organized and are safe for use. Inventories and orders approved supplies and equipment within budget guidelines. Solicits bids when required.
  • Completes regular inspections and safety assessments; maintains a hazard and drug-free environment; documents issues to identify risk areas; and recommends improvements. Reports maintenance problems with the facility or grounds to the Facilities Manager and supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Assists with preparation of department budget and submits financial reports.
  • Works some evenings, weekends and holidays, including July 4th. Serves as onsite supervisor, as requested, for periodic evening and weekend programming operations (rentals, programs and events).
  • Must have access to smartphone and/or computer with internet access for company-provided email and job-related communication and scheduling.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation programming.
  • Thorough knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work with and communicate to diverse audiences and employees.
  • Work independently using sound judgement in the execution of the position’s duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and members of the public, including children and their parents/guardians, in a positive, courteous, tactful, and professional manner.
  • Perform moderate physical activities such as frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities. Physical activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, crawling, carrying, pushing and grasping. Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Work in an office environment and indoor recreation facilities. Work outdoors at various parks and properties in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Lead workshops and/or training classes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any combination of education or experience substantially equivalent to graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in recreation, education or a related field. Two years progressively responsible experience in recreation programming and supervision of staff.
  • Certified in American Red Cross in First Aid/CPR/AED or (acceptable equivalent) or ability to obtain withing the first 120 days of employment but no later than one week before first week of summer camp.
  • Medical Administration Training or ability to complete by no later than one week before the first day of summer camp.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and Child Protective Services background check.
  • Water Safety Instructor certified or ability to obtain withing the first 120 days of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Strong computer skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to speak Spanish.
  • Additional supervisory or recreation programming experience.
