Your hometown…2019 is around the corner!

As you set goals for 2019, I hope that you will add giving back in some way to your community as a priority. That could be joining a civic organization such as Rotary or Kiwanis; volunteering as a Booster club member or serving on the PTSA at WMHS or GHS; participating in one of the FOWL-sponsored lake cleanups; or participating with Scouts or the MV Mom’s Club.

Stepping up to serve on your HOA or condominium association board is another choice that can take more time and some training, but is so important to the well-being of our community. Running for the MVF Board of Directors is another option.

Recently, I sat at an MVF Board meeting wondering, “where were all the residents?” The Board had a full agenda of interesting topics, and was about to pass a budget with an assessment increase for those who use MVF pools, tennis courts and community centers, but there was only one resident to be found.

So, what does this mean? Are residents happy with MVF and the way the community is running? Does it mean people are busy, and they just don’t have the time or energy to go to a Board meeting? Are residents communicating their suggestions, complaints, etc. using social media? I think it’s a little bit of all of these things. Regardless of the reason, I am always thankful for those who do come forward to serve on the MVF Board, on a homeowner or condominium association board or a committee to provide leadership and/or valuable input into the operations of our community.

Your Village leadership has worked really hard over the last seven years or so to encourage revitalization and reinvestment in our community, from community vision sessions that resulted in the creation of the Vision 2030 Plan, to the adoption of our own Village Master Plan. The great news is that redevelopment plans have been approved by the Planning Board for the golf course and Village Center. And, there is a new suitor to redevelop the Professional Center—Lidl Grocery.

With all that said, the question I continually get is when the plans will actually become reality. I think 2019 will be a time of celebration, with ground breakings for both the golf course property and the Village Center. Hopefully, much planning will occur on the Professional Center site as well.

Also in 2019, MVF will continue its community reinvestment with planning for the redevelopment of the North Creek Pool and Community Center. Currently, three design build teams are at work developing concept plans, which will be unveiled next spring to the Recreation Committee first and then to the MVF Board.

Much community input is sought on this project. This is the most ambitious pool project yet, because of the size of the pool, tightness of the pool deck area and accessibility issues in the community center leading to the pool. Although MVF has done an excellent job reserving for a project of this kind, the budget could prove to be challenging, given all the bells and whistles that our community desires, as well as county building code requirements.

I look forward to meeting more of you in 2019.
